Magic Shot Outside the Military Camp
Yuan Shu sent 100 thousand troops， led by General Ji Ling， to attack Liu Bei. For fear ofLü Bu in Xuzhou who might lend Liu a hand， Yuan wrote Lü a letter， together with many foodsupplies as gifts， asking him not to help Liu. Liu， on the other hand， wrote lüa letter askingfor assistance. “If I remain an onlooker with folded arms，”thought Lü， “I will be in dangerafter Yuan defeats Liu. But if I help Liu， Yuan will be be resentful to me.” So Lü invited bothLiu Bei and Ji Ling to a bqnqet.
Lü sat between Liu and Ji at the banquet. After a few rounds of toasts Lü began， “Pleasegrant me a favor by stopping the fight.” When Ji Ling refused， Lu shouted for his long lanceto be brought over. Both Liu and Ji got a fright. “I'll stand my lance 150steps away outside thegate. If my arrow hits its edge you.two will stop your fight. And if I miss the target you haveyour own way.” Ji secretly hoped that he would miss the target， while Liu crossed his fingerswished Lu succees. Lü and wine brought up to him. After each one had a cup Lu arched hisbow， aimed and shot with a big shout. The arrow flew like lightening toward the target， andhit right on the edge of the lance. A big applause rose from everybody around. Lu dropped hisbow and laughed， saying， “You see， even the heavens wish that you stop fighting.” Withhis excellent archery， Lü averted a fight between the two sides.
辕门射戢
袁绍之弟袁术派大将纪灵率领十万大军攻打刘备。袁术担心在徐州的吕布救援刘备，派人给吕布送去粮草和密信，要吕布按兵不动。刘备考虑到自己兵力不足，也写信求助吕布。吕布收了袁术的粮草，又收了刘备的求援信，他想：我若不救刘备，袁术得逞后我也危险;若我救刘备，袁术必恨我。于是，吕布让人把刘备和纪灵同时请来赴宴。
吕布坐在刘备和纪灵中间，吩咐开宴，刚吃几杯酒，吕布说：“ 看在我的面上，你两家不要打了。”纪灵不肯。吕布大叫一声：“把我的画戟拿来!”刘备、纪灵都吓了一跳。吕布又说：“我把画戟插到辕门外一百五十步地方，如果我一箭射中画戟的枝尖，你们两家就不要打了。如果我射不中，打不打我就不管了。纪灵希望射不中，刘备希望能射中。吕布叫人端上酒来，各自饮了一杯，酒毕，取出弓箭，搭箭拉弦，只听”嗖“的一声，吕布大喊：”着!“那箭不偏不倚，正中画戟的枝尖。在场的人无不喝彩。吕布把弓扔在地上，笑着说：”看来老天也不愿意让你们打仗啊!“就这样，吕布以他精湛的箭法平息了一场厮杀。

This is a story from Three Kingdoms. Guan Yu was hit by a poisonous arrow in the right arm while attacking Fancheng City. When his men took the arrowhead out， they found that the poison had already seeped into the bone， so they persuaded him to go to Jingzhou for treatment. Determined to take over Fancheng City， Guan refused to retreat. Seeing Guan's wound getting worse day by day， they sent out scouts to look for famous doctors. One day， a man named Hua Tuo came by boat to the camp especially to cure Guan Yu. Guan asked him about how he would heal the wound. Hua said： “I am afraid that you will be scared， so Isuggest that we set up a post with a loop to tie down your arm with rope. Then， when your eyes are covered， I will start the operation.” Guan laughingly said， “That's necessary.” Then he gave orders to hold a dinner for Hua Tuo. After drinking several glasses of wine， Guan started to play chess. At the same time， he reached out his right arm to Hua Tuo and said， “It is at your disposal. I have no fear.” Hua cut the skin and flesh open and scraped the bone with scalpel. Everyone present covered his eyes while Guan continued drinking and playing chess. In a moment， the blood filled a basin. When the poison was scraped off the bone， Guan stood up and smilingly said， “Now my arm can move freely just like before. Mr. Hua Tuo， you are a magic doctor!” Hua said， “Since I started medical practice， I have not seen anyone like you. You are a magic general.”

关羽攻打樊城时，被毒箭射中右臂。将士们取出箭头一看，毒已渗入骨头，劝关羽回荆州治疗。关羽决心攻下樊城，不肯退。将士们见关羽箭伤逐渐加重，便派人四处打听名医。一天，有人从江上驾小舟来到寨前，自报姓华名佗，特来给关羽治伤。关羽问华佗怎样治法?华佗说：“我怕你害怕，立一柱子，柱子上吊一环，把你的胳膊套入环中，用绳子捆紧，再盖住你的眼睛，给你开刀治疗。”关羽笑着说：“不用捆。”然后吩咐宴招待华佗。关羽喝了几杯酒就与人下棋，同时把右臂伸给华佗，并说：“随你治吧，我不害怕。”华佗切开肉皮，用刀刮骨。在场的人吓得用手捂着眼。再看关羽，一边喝酒，一边下棋。过了一会，血流了一盆，骨上的毒刮完，关羽笑着站起来对众将说：“我的胳膊伸弯自如，好像从前一样。华佗先生，你真是神医呀!”华佗说：“我行医以来，从没见像你这样了不起的人，将军乃神人也。”

Xu Shu was much valued by Liu Bei for his strategic talents. After several victories on thebattleground against Cao Cao， Xu was made the chief military advisor. At the news， Cao Caowas begrudging. “If you want this person，” one of his advisors said， “you can bring hismother to Xuchang and send a forged letter in his mother's handwriting， asking Xu Shu todesert Liu Bei and come here. As Xu is well-known for a strong filial affection， surely he willcome.” This plot worked， for Xu， on receiving the letter， cried tearfully， asking Liu Bei foran immediate departure. Feeling sad， though， Liu persisted in his stay for another night，during which the two aired their sad feelings.
the next day Liu laid a banquet outside the city for Xu. Holding the latter's hand， Liusaid， “After we separate today， only heaven knows when and where we will meet again.” Hewept bitter tears. After setting off on his way， Xu suddenly turned his horse and returned. “Ialmost forgot an important matter，” he said to Liu. “Ten kilometers from Xiangyang City， in aplace called Long zhong， Do you want to meet him?” Liu expressed his willingness at once，but also aired doubt about whether Zhuge Liang was as talented as Xu. “He tells configurationsof stars in the heavens，” Xu assured him， “and recognizes everything on earth. He knows aperson's real nature at the first meeting-the number one talent under the heaven. If you havehim as your military advisor， you'll have the country under your name.” Liu suggested a visitto Zhuge by Xu on his behalf， at this， the latter shook his head in disapproval. “You mustgo and offer your invitation personally， and his acceptance depends entirely on yoursincerity.” With these words said， Xu turned his horse and left. Later， Liu paid three trips toZhuge's straw house， another favorite story among Chinese people.
走马荐诸葛
徐庶反奔刘备后，很得刘备重用。曾帮助刘备几次打败曹兵，被封为军师。曹操得知此事很惊讶。曹操的谋士程昱献计说：丞相如果想用此人，召来不难，徐庶是个孝子，丞相派人把他母亲接到许昌，再仿他母亲的笔体写信让他来许昌，他必来。“徐庶接信，果然大哭一场，拿信找刘备辞行。刘备见信也哭，强留徐庶叙情一夜。第二天，刘备在城外排宴替徐庶饯行。刘备拉着徐庶的手说：”先生这一走，你我天各一方，不知何时才能再见?“说完又痛哭流涕。徐庶行数里又拍马返回对刘备说：”忘了一件大事，襄阳城外二十里的隆中，有一位天下奇人叫诸葛亮，将军想不想见他?“刘备说：”我当然愿意见他，不知他能比上先生吗?“徐庶说： ”他抬头能知天文，低头能察地理，见面能识人心，是天下第一才人，如他能出来帮助胸，将军就可以稳坐天下了。“刘备见徐庶这样了解诸葛亮，想请徐庶辛苦一趟把诸葛亮请来。徐庶摇头说：”这样的人才，只能将军亲自去请，他愿不愿出来，还得看将军的诚意。“ 徐庶说完，策马离去。之后引出刘备三顾茅庐的故事。
