相信大家会在面试或者招聘会中看到招聘要求一般都标明应试者需要具备什么样的能力，我们也知道社会的发展需要各种各样有能力的人，那么什么是能力呢？能诗会画，能饮酒千杯不醉，能万军丛中取敌首级等等，都是能力。而且，很显然从以上例子中可以看到能力的内容是由具体场合决定的，也就是说，能力只是一个模糊的定义，具体含义须看场景。这种汉语中的一词多义，或者说抽象寓意的词在英语中又是怎么表达的呢？我们先来看一段Chinadaily的新闻：
China vows to defend islands
标题：中国发誓要捍卫岛屿主权
China and its armed forces have the "confidence, capability" and unwavering determination to defend the Diaoyu Islands, the Defense Ministry said on Thursday.
中国国防部周三表示，中国政府和中国人民解放军有“信心、能力”和坚定不移的决心，保护钓鱼岛。

一名智囊团成员在访问北京时警告说，美日联盟频繁的国防演习已经引起亚太地区周边关系的紧张，也削弱了美日中三方在该地区处理危机的战略互信。
上文中的capacity，就是能力，它的形容词形式capable表示“有…能力的，能够…的”，一般用于be capable of + n/doing something 表示能做到、能做某件事。
capacity [kə'pæsəti]

1. ability to perform or produce
2. the susceptibility of something to a particular treatment
3. the amount that can be contained
从上面几个选项中可以看到，capacity的主要含义有
1.能力；
2.承受力
3.容纳量
与ability相比，capacity多了“容纳”和“承受”的内容，因此含义更广泛，而ability可以是指任意的能力类型，能表示更多的能力种类。比如capacity的第二项释义就是‘承受的能力’，所以综合来说，在表示抽象的“能力”时，双方可互换。而早表示容纳和承受的时候capacity最合适。
因此上段新闻中所说的capacity也可以用ability替换。

此外，capacity还有“酒量”的含义，

he had drunk beyond his capacity.他喝酒过量了，或者说他已经不胜酒力了。
