The mountain climber Bobby was famous for his attempts to climb the big snowy mountain. He had tried at least 30 times, but had always failed. Every time, he began the climbing at a good pace, focusing on the snowy summit, imaging the beautiful view and the sense of freedom up there. But as he went on,he was tired out,and often he would look down at his worn-out shoes. Finally when the clouds had gathered around him,he understood that he wouldn’t be able to enjoy the view from the summit.

One time he went up the mountain with Peeper, the town optician, who saw his failure.

It was Peeper who most encouraged him to try again, and he presented him with a pair of special sunglasses. “If it starts clouding over, put these glasses on, or if you. feet start hurting, put them on, too. These are special glasses; they will help you. ”

Bobby accepted the gift without thinking much, but when his feet started hurting again, he remembered what Peeper had said and he put on the glasses. The pain was pretty bad, but with those new sunglasses he could still manage to see the snowcovered summit; so he continued. The clouds gathered, but this time he could still see the summit through the clouds. So Bobby kept climbing, leaving the clouds behind, forgot his pain, and finally arrived at the summit. Bobby looked more closely at the sunglasses, and understood everything.

Peeper had made a light image on the glasses,in the form of the snowy-covered summit. It was made in such a way that he could only see it if he looked upwards. But Bobby realized that the only reason of reaching the summit was his clear aims and hope.

21. The most important reason why Bobby had failed many times was that ______.

A. protect his eyes from being hurt B. help him see farther

C. enable him to see through the clouds D. inspire him to go on

A. The glasses were full of magic.

B. The glasses helped Bobby to keep the goal in mind.

C. Peeper could always find a way to help Bobby.

D. Bobby could never reach the summit without the glasses.

24. Which of the following can be best used to describe the story?

A. Goal in mind, success in hand. B. Failure is the mother of success.

C. Difficulties make life worth living. D. A bad beginning makes a bad ending.

You are an intelligent and a good talker. You have no problem giving a wonderful report, delivering an excellent speech or participating in a political debate. You strive for meaningful conversations and have no patience for small talk. “The weather is nice, isn’t it?” Really, who cares?

Although seemingly meaningless and informal, small talk is the starting point of all relationships. Romances and friendships begin with small talk. In a more pragmatic light, you can’t avoid it. Getting a job, working with colleagues, winning new business partners - all of these require small talk.

Americans call it the “Gift of Gab”. Want to be successful? You? better acquire this gift.

An article on the Forbes website lists a few reasons why small talk is so important for one’s career. Not only does small talk make us more likeable; in one’s career, small talk is also a “free option”.

It can lead to a host of outcomes & from a merely pleasant exchange to the signing of a multimillion-dollar business deal & says the article.

In a time when a big part of our lives has moved online & the art of small talk is mysterious. The awkward experience of feeling like a total outsider at a social function, such as a company event or a dinner party, is shared by many of us.

“But don’t worry,” says Elizabeth Bernstein,a relationship columnist at The Wall Street Journal, “you can learn to develop your conversational intelligence. ”

First of all, remember small talk is not about communicating& it’s about connecting. Bernstein advises focusing on the other person.

Bad small talkers tend to dominate the conversation. They spend too much time on their favorite topic, whether it’s football or how clever their kids are.

They think they are being social because they are talking. But they are talking to somebody, not with someone. Such people often give the impression of being self-centered and inconsiderate. So no wonder they will lose good chances, like a good fortune or a rise in their positions.

25. People usually begin with “The weather is nice, isn’t it?” because_______.

A. they care much about the weather

B. they don’t want to talk more to each other

C. they just want to have small talk

D. the topic of their talk is in relation to weather

26. The primary art of small talk is_______.

A. being informal B. bringing in a lot of business chances

C. relaxing atmosphere D. connecting rather than communicating

27. The author’s attitude towards “small talk” is .

A. skeptical B. indifferent

C. supportive D. objective

WANT to improve your life? Then do something awesome.

According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, researchers have found that awe-inspiring experiences improve our prosocial (亲社会的)behaviors, making us more generous and more humble(谦恭的)-inspiring experiences make us more empathetic, allowing us to recognize another person’s emotional expressions better and respond with concern. And they make us more willing to engage with trust and connect with others.

What kind of experiences can be called “awe-inspiring”? The examples mentioned by the journal include scuba diving, witnessing the birth of a child, watching a meteor (流星) shower, and visiting a forest. A man said he found it awe-inspiring to work with homeless people and witness their courage and kindness. Awe is an emotional response to something very large, says the article, and it challenges and expands our way of seeing the world.

Is the feeling of awe felt the same to all the people? No,the feeling of awe is felt differently by different individuals, and for different reasons. The deep blue ocean might inspire different feelings in a poet than in a fisherman, for example. According to an article in The Atlantic,a 2012 study from Stanford University investigated several aspects of awe and came to an interesting conclusion: the feeling of awe changes the way you think about time.

The study says an awe-inspiring experience is a moment so overwhelming that time seems to stand still.

When you look at or experience something awesome, like looking at a waterfall or a sky filled with stars, your mind is fixed on the present moment. Time seems to slow down, the Stanford researchers concluded, making you feel like you have more of it to spare. This makes you feel more patient, less materialistic, and more willing to help others.

Other researchers believe awe is powerful because it takes us out of our own heads. “Awe makes our individual identity less important and gets us to think about things bigger than ourselves,” Paul Piff, assistant professor of psychology at the University of California, told The Wall Street Journal. Piff has found that many simple things in life inspire awe - listening to a piece of music you haven’t heard before, going on a nature hike, or going to a pop concert. All you need to do is start noticing and marveling at the world around you.

28. Which of the following behaviors is the result of awe-inspiring experience?

A. You can gain complete trust from people around.

B. You will be proud after watching a meteor shower

C. You refuse to go diving for lack of courage.

D. You will donate some money to charity.

29. The underlined word “empathetic” in Para. 2 is closest in meaning to “_______” .

athetic ile

essive ent

30. As to the awe-inspiring experience, which of the following does the writer agree with?

A. It refers to the experience that arouses fear in our heart.

B. Time will be still when we experience it.

C. It makes us feel small when faced with something very large and powerful.

D. Different people feel almost the same when experiencing it.

31. How is the passage mainly developed?

A. By raising questions. B. By making comparisons.

C. By giving examples. D. By making classifications.

Need Wine Advertising Ideas? Here’re several ideas for your next campaign.

Gourmet Ads is a global vertical advertising network reaching household grocery buyers with offices in North America, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. Gourmet Ads works with wine buyers right around the world, marketing their wine brand to grocery buyers online. So we thought we,d share several simple Wine Advertising Ideas on how wine companies can market themselves online.

Some of our Wine Advertising Ideas are obvious, others not so.

1. Branding Advertising

Probably the most obvious and straightforward is brand marketing. This is where the message is simply the brand and is created to engage the user and provide brand awareness so your product stands out on the shelf. Some of the key messages when advertising wine brands include location of the winery, awards and varieties.

2. Retailer & Branding Campaign

Telling your consumers where they can buy your wine is very important, and it’s the reason why you’ve probably got a long list of them on your website. But have you thought about a co-promotion with the retailers to drive sales in store? Your advertising could drive people to a landing page which told people of the offer or allowed them to print a coupon to get the discount. Whatever the offer is,both you and the retailers benefit, which is why you could share the advertising costs with them allowing you to reach a great number of consumers.

3. Cellar Door Visit

Driving consumers to our cellar door may sound unusual, but visitors to winery cellar doors spend money. Apart from buying wine and gifts for friends, many stay for lunch or afternoon tea in the winery restaurant. The strategy should be aimed at targeting the nearest major city towards the end when people are thinking about what to do on the weekend.

4. Wine Dinner Events

Many wineries undertake Wine Dinner Events throughout the year, but how often is the dinner not fully booked and you end up giving seats away for free? Together with the restaurant or hotel which is running the event an online advertising campaign can be launched to drive ticket sales. This can be promoted to people that have an interest in food and wine in the local area.

5. Winemaker Events

Many wineries run events throughout the year to connect with their consumers. A great example of this is the Australian winery Penfolds which runs re-corking clinics around Australia for owners of Penfolds Grange to have their wine inspected and re-corked. Why not run an online campaign to promote your winery event.

Feel free to contact us if you think we’ve missed any important Wine Advertising Ideas.

32. Who are the target readers of the passage?

A. Wine consumers. B. Wine companies.

C. Winery visitors. D. Grocery buyers.

33. Why should you get a long list of your retailers on your website?

A. To tell your consumers where to buy the wine and which is the best.

B. To cooperate with the retailers and promote sales.

C. To allow the consumers to get a discount.

D. To cut down on the cost of the retailers.

34. The primary purpose of organizing Cellar Door visit is_______.

A. To invite consumers to inspect the process of how we make the wine.

B. To organize a trip to treat them and make them relaxed over the weekend.

C. To make more money by offering goods and other services.

D. To arrange a gathering for consumers to make friends as well as enjoy the wine.

35. This passage would most probably be found in_______.

A. a brochure B. a journal

C. a novel D. a report

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada.

In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. 36 As we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.

Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. 37 The longer time goes on,the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. 38

39 Next time you go shopping or to work or visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps,or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? 40 Prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through,so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, which counts.

A. All are affected by people's attitude towards them.

B. Disability is not just something that happens to other people.

C. Disability is so serious a social problem that we all have to give a lot of thought to it.

D. Disabled people face many physical barriers.

E. Not many public places are accessible to people with disabilities.

F. But there are other barriers.

G. There are many progressive disabling diseases.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)

A possible sample

Traveling around the world is not only an effective way for people to ease tension in daily life, but also a direct way to explore the wonder of the world. Nowadays international tourism has become a rapidly developing industry. However, many people maintain that traveling to other parts of the world creates tension rather than understanding.

The difference in language, culture, customs, and lifestyle often results in conflicts between tourists and local residents. People from various cultures often have different attitudes towards the same thing or behavior, thus causing further misunderstanding. Besides, the increase of international tourists will directly lead to the rise of prices, the problem of traffic congestion, and the worsening of environment. So it is not strange for international tourists to sense the obvious hostility from local inhabitants.

Wonderful as it seems to be,the negative aspects of the international tourism cannot be overlooked. Anyone going to another country should be taught to observe local customs and protect the local cultural heritages. Otherwise a well—intentioned vacation may turn out to be a nightmare.

I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.

I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.

I examined the chick(雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.

The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.

Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.

A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by zxxk the greatest sight of all — LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

Some of the world’s most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.

Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.

It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.

“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”

Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.

Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight(感悟) on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,” says Moran, “so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster.”

A buld-it-yourself solar still(蒸馏器) is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas where the liquid is not readily available. Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5' 5' sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container— perhaps just a drinking cup — to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.

To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up — and out — the side of the hole.

Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圆锥体) with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.

The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸发) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment zxxk out through the tube, and won’t have to break down the still every time you need a drink.

32. What do we know about the solar still equipment from the first paragraph?

A. It’s delicate. B. It’s expensive.

C. It’s complex. D. It’s portable.

33. What does the underlined phrase “the water catcher” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A. The tube. B. The still.

C. The hole. D. The cup.

34. What’s the last step of constructing a working solar still?

A. Dig a hole of a certain size. B. Put the cup in place.

C. Weight the sheet’s center down. D. Cover the hole with the plastic sheet.

35. When a solar still works, drops of water come into the cup form .

A. the plastic tube B. outside the hole

C. the open air D. beneath the sheet

If anyone had told me three years ago that I would be spending most of my weekends camping. I would have laughed heartily. Campers, in my eyes, were people who enjoyed insect bites, ill-cooked meals, and uncomfortable sleeping bags. They had nothing in common with me. 36 .

The friends who introduced me to camping thought that it meant to be a pioneer. 37 We sleep in a tent, cooked over an open fire, and walked a long distance to take the shower and use the bathroom. This brief visit with Mother Nature cost me two days off from work, recovering from a bad case of sunburn and the doctor’s bill for my son’s food poisoning.

I was, nevertheless, talked into going on another fun-filled holiday in the wilderness. 38 Instead, we had a pop-up camper with comfortable beds and an air conditioner. My nature-loving friends had remembered to bring all the necessities of life.

39 We have done a lot of it since. Recently, we bought a twenty-eight-foot travel trailer complete with a bathroom and a built-in TV set. There is a separate bedroom, a modern kitchen with a refrigerator. The trailer even has matching carpet and curtains.

40 It must be true that sooner or later, everyone finds his or her way back to nature. I recommend that you find your way in style.

In the summer holiday following my eighteen birthday, I took driving lessons. I still remember how hard first day was. Before getting into the car, I thought I had learned the instructor’s orders, so once I started the car, my mind goes blank. I forgot what he had said to me altogether. The instructor kept repeating the word, “Speed up!” “Slow down!” “Turning left!” I was so much nervous that I could hardly tell which direction was left. A few minutes late, the instructor asked me to stop the car. It was a relief and I came to a suddenly stop just in the middle on the road.
